I am able to send and receive e-mails through my internet provider but I need to have my settings from you updated to IMAP. I have the settings. Please call.

I tried your online support system but without any success. I do not know if you have my server as POP-3 or what. I contacted my internet server and I can send and receive e-mails through mail.twc.com. Please check that you have IMAP for the server. My settings are mail.twc.com; incoming IMAP 143; outbound SMTP port 587; e-mail mgramsb@columbus.rr.com; and password (I think this is not for public consumption so have removed it). Please change to these if they are not now shown so that I can receive my e-mails.

Oh goodness. Please, immediately, change your password. You should never tell anyone else a password, let alone post it to a forum like this.

Thunderbird is a program that you install on your computer to work with email. You appear to be under the impression that you're talking to someone who operates a mails server.

In the menu, go to File|New|Existing Mail Account and enter those account details for yourself. In fact, you shouldn't need to enter port settings (143 etc) since Thunderbird should discover them for itself. It may be able to discover the mail.twc.com for itself too.

I don't know where you will get this answer but I have windows 8.1. I cannot get the menu bar. Is there some way you can help me with the IMAP server settings. If not, please give me a telephone number to talk to a real person who can help me.

Try the Application Menu button then.

[≡]New Message|Existing Mail Account

Note that you need to hover on New Message; do not click it, but wait for a pop-out menu.

This forum is a community-driven self-help system. There is no help desk nor a phoneline. Recall how much you paid for this software (zero!) and the total absence of advertisingin it, so where would the money to pay the wages or for telephones come from?

Be wary of sites that offer to help for a fee from you; they are often scoundrels, will overcharge you and may damage your computer.

Perhaps you might follow these instructions so you have a menu bar https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/display-thunderbird-menus-and-toolbar

It will probably be of no use to you, but for the future I have filed a bug to update our database of mail providers to include TWC IMAP. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1206284
