38.3.0 HORRIBLE!!! Problems with Lightning (bug 1211291)

more options

Hello, Thunderbird updated itself to 38.3.0 today and I now have several issues:

1. When you have the inbox selected, rather than see the subject, the sender the date sent etc on the top half of the pane and the body of the email in the bottom, I see a page that says Thunderbird Mail - Inbox with the email, accounts, advanced features below it. It looks just like the page for the server level folder. No matter what folder I pick it says Thunderbird Mail - [Folder Name]. If I right click on a folder and select Open in New Tab, I can see my emails.

2. It is slow to respond.

3. Calendar is gone. The menu item Tasks and Events is gone so I can't select it from there. I saw another post suggested going to the Tools > Options menu and making sure Lightning was enabled which brings me to my next problem.

4. When you select many of the menu items nothing happens. This is the case with Help >About Thunderbird (so I could check the version and look for an upgrade), Tools > Options and several others.

I am on Widows 7 64 bit. I noticed in the remove programs section that it updated to 38.3.0 today and that FIrefox also updated. As I type this I notice that it also is buggy, freezing the text as I type and very slow. For Thunderbird there was an un-install for 38.3.0 and one for 38.2.0. I uninstalled the 38.3.0 hoping that the .2.0 would still be there and work. Not the case. Not looking forward to spending hours re-installing it for both myself and my wife. It seems several people are experiencing similar issues, but I don't think anyone else got all of them at once. I've included a picture of the folder view.

Thanks for the advice in advance.

1. Help > troubleshooting information. Click the show profile button Close Thunderbird. Delete the files Foldertree.json. Panacea.dat session.json XULstore.json Localstore.rdf Restart Thunderbird.

2.

3. On the toolbar then  Add-ons Select add-on and see what the issue with the lightning add-on is. It might just be waiting for a restart.

4. Is probably a symptom of 2.

I have deliberately not addressed 2 as it is probably your anti virus getting all excited about this new foreign program. In a day or two it should get instructions from home that Thunderbird 38.3 is ok. Or you could manually tell your anti virus to stop scanning the Thunderbird profile folder and making things slow.

Hello Matt, Did all of #1. Did #3. There is nothing indicating an issue with Lightning.

I don't have that many add-ons. Adblock Plus 2.6.11, gContactSync 2.0.7, Lightning 4.0.3 and Provider for Google Calendar 1.0.4.

I disabled all of the add-ons one at a time and then in groups. I can resolve all of the issues I am having by disabling Lightning (except the calendar). No other combination has any affect. I am afraid the issue has something to do with Lightning.

Ok what calendars do you have in Lightning. Provider and name please.

I am looking mostly for things like the Google birthday calendar, but all remote calendars are suspect.

If all else fails, and there are only a few calendar, you might try disabling some or all and working backwards. Usually it is a single calendar that is at issue. Usually birthdays or holidays or such like, not general calendars. But when there is an issue. Nothing is really sacrosanct in trying to root it out.

I have 4 calendars, all of them google, none of them Google Birthday or holiday. I cannot get to the calendars. If I have Lightning enabled, everything locks up. If I disable Lightning, I can navigate folders and emails, but can't do anything with calendars. When I start in safe mode, I still loose Lightning.

I get the issue with calendars, safe mode disables add-ons hence no calendar.

Can you go into the Help menu > troubleshooting information and copy to clipboard and paste into a reply on the forum?

Are your using The provider for Google calendar add-on or caldav connections for the calendars. With the calendar enabled, Click on the blue monitor icons in the bottom left of the window to enter offline mode.

Is there an improvement in offline mode (mail and sync will be broken, I am looking for bread crumbs not a cure.

While in offline mode open your calendar Right click the calendar entry on the left and select properties Disable offline support click the blue icons to re enable online mode. Does disabling offline support help?

Finally if none of the above is showing signs of improvement, restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX

If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.

First, With Lightning enabled, I get what you see in the screen capture. There isn't any menu item to get to the calendars and when I click any sub menu item nothing happens. So, I am unable to enter offline mode. As i posted earlier, I am using Provider for Google Calendar, but having that enabled or disabled doesn't change my ability to get into a calendar or for other menu options to work. Since I started typing this and was in the middle of another task I will restart with networking in safe mode and post the results. For me the only thing that changed when this occured was the update to 38.3.0. 38.2.0 worked perfect! Below is the help>troubleshooting information:

I did a Windows safe mode start with Networking. Same results, with Lightning enabled nothing works.

Chosen Solution

Indeed, reports indicate this is caused by the Calendar addon.

For Windows, 1. install older version from http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/38.2.0/win32/en-US/Thunderbird%20Setup%2038.2.0.exe 2. remove calendar addon, restart thunderbird 3. update thunderbird at help | About 4. reinstall calendar addon

Does that help?

Thanks to everyone. One note: After installing and opening .2.0, Lightning wasn't enabled and said not compatible with .2.0. I removed it and followed the directions, but it leads me to believe I could have removed it from .3.0 uninstalled and reinstalled, which would have saved a few steps or perhaps just removed lightning and reinstalled it. Just a thought, but once again thanks.

Updated to 38.4.0 yesterday. Same trouble. This time I did a safe mode start removed Lightning, restarted, and added lightning back. Fixed the problem.

Thanks for the report. Greatly appreciated.

So I believe you currently should have Lightning 4.0.3.1 installed.

more options

yes, Lightning is 4.0.3.1. I didn't check the version before the re-install however.
