i am trying to move from outlook express in ms xp to thunderbird. later i want to move to windows 10 in another computer with thunderbird. however:

1. i have hotmail, yahoo and 2 gmail accounts. totally 4.

2. i have many many folders in each account in outlook express. they are sorted and organised over 15 years.

3. the emails saved on my computer are different from those i keep on the websites of hotmail etc. i do not need to download earlier mails from there, only new ones once i migrate to a new email client.

4. i had trasferred emails to thunderbird but when i start downloading, i get again the old emails which are a few thousand on the website and not the same as in oe. i need to sync to the latest emails only. how to do that?

please help!

you should have had Outlook express delete the mail when it downloaded it if you don't want your new mail client to ask the server for all mail.

These are my views, but, I'm not an expert

Starting with your last question (Pt 4) - You cannot sync to only the most recent emails. You can only sync to everything that is on the email server

What you could do though is setup a message filter in thunderbird to redirect all incoming emails to an "Old" folder based on date.

Pt 3) - Same

Pt 2) - Good luck with that ... My advice ... Create the new folders you want manually as you need them.

Pt 1) No problem to Thunderbird

Hope this helps

thanks for the responses. a message filter to separate old msgs when they download might work. will try that out. i am new to thunderbird and not all answers to my questions are already online.
