Why does Thunderbird not respond? Message "Not Responding" No response from author

When I am writing an email, the program seems to time out and the message "Program not responding" comes on, the screen gets light and the circle just spins. Also may say Thunderbird is fixing problem. Nothing happens within an hour, anyway. I have been shutting Thunderbird down and restarting, but will happen again.
