I cannot properly set up and read my Thunderbird local folder with older emails on a new Macbook, older email folders are readable on older Mac, please help.
Macbook with problem is new 2015 model, runs OS X El Capitan
Older computer (2011 model) where old emails appear fine is Macbook Pro, runs also OS X El Capitan
Have tried to set up Library folder in Users folder in Macintosh HD. When placed in there, older email folders have extensions like .snm and cannot be read by Thunderbird.

on your old laptop.
open the troubleshooting information on the help menu and click show folders Close Thunderbird and select all the files and folders that are opened in the finder
Copy to a USB stick
DO the same on your new Thunderbird install, except copy everything from the usb stick into the folder that opens when you click show profile folder (if you do not get prompts to replace lots of file I think you are in the wrong place.
Remember copying with Thunderbird running will not work ever
