Thunderbird 45 will not read address books

I have just upgraded Thunderbird to version 45. Email and calendar seem to be working fine, but the Address book part of the application seems not to be working. I can't get lists of address books or contacts. If I create a new address book it creates a new .mab file, but the address book window remains empty. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I vaguely recall something like this being caused by an add-on. Does problem go away if you start Thunderbird in safe mode?
