Firefox disabled Norton 2017 security toolbar on Windows 7 this morning. Why?

2017.9.2.2 seems to be the latest update for this toolbar. The toolbar comes as part of the Norton Security package which Firefox has summarily truncated. And with no way to fix it, this action seems to be somewhat high handed. If the developers are saying that the toolbar is itself insecure, then I might appreciate the heads-up - is that in fact what the problem is? If not, why is it beyond your control? Couldn't you just treat it as signed so it could be enabled for the users who have it?

Back on 6. July 2017 Firefox (FF) disabled the Norton Security Toolbar (NST) for several people. What the cause or reason was is unclear. Back then, I got it back up and running by uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox. Today, 18. July 2017 FF again disabled the NST.

  • Win 7 Home Pro 64bit
  • FF 54.0.1 (build 20170628075643)
  • NST 2017.9.2.2
  • Norton Version 22.9.4.8

Except for the build ID -- for which I do not have a comparison point -- both FF and NST versions are the same from when it first happened (7/6/17) to today (7/18/17)

Hopefully you've solved this problem by now, but it just happened to me for the first time this morning. I found an easy solution on the Norton Community forum: Norton was showing me that Live Update was current and wouldn't let me run it; by right-clicking on the Norton icon, however, I was able to run Live Update and it downloaded 45mb. I restarted the computer and ran Live Update a second time. It again downloaded an update. I repeated the process a third time and no more updates. When I opened Firefox, I had a functional NS toolbar again. (Norton also updated its own dialog box. Why Live Update said it was current when i wasn't is another question.)

Thank you all for your responses. Norton could not solve the problem even after taking control of my computer. I will try the Live Update over and over again to see if that will work when I have time. Everything says it is all updated but the toolbox has refused to come to life. This appears to be a Firefox-Norton problem. Thank you all again for your suggestions and concern. Neleh

We have two identical two-week old laptops running Windows 10. They are both updated to the latest Norton version (liveupdate shows no updates). Both are running almost the exact same version of FireFox (54.0.1) but one is the Funnelcake version. The Funnelcake version has the Norton Security Toolbar installed and working. The non-Funnelcake version has the Toolbar disabled by Firefox.
