The support is for version 38, we are now at 52. Is the recommendation still the same? For backup purposes, and also because OneDrive after every message need to sync a large MBOX file I'd like to start converting my files and use MAILDIR. Is that now recommended or not yet?

Sorry, no. There has been no significant change in recent years to resolving remaining maildir issues.
