Firefox does not update from 54, doesn't recognize Windows7 x64, why and how to fix?

The Germans do not reply, so I will try here: a working Win7 x64 laptop has FF 54.0 installed, automatic updates are enabled. FF works fine, but is outdated and does not allow for newer language packs etc. Yet FF does not update at all, nor will it accept the installation of a 57 package, error: "Wndows7 needed" - WTF? Tried x32 and x64 install packages, same issue, I do not want to completely wipe FF, as this is not my own laptop (settings, passwords, bookmarks, addons would need to be rebuilt)

Why is FF not seeing Windows as is, what does it THINK it is? And how do I overcome the problem? Does an export of the profile rescue ALL personal data, settings, Addons etc? I doubt it, Thanks!

hi, could you go to the firefox menu ≡ > help ? > troubleshooting information, copy the contents of that page and paste them here into a reply on the forum (or if it's too long through a site like https://pastebin.mozilla.org/ and provide the link here)?

this might give us a clue what is going on. thank you!

Thanks for the reply.

I have limited access to this laptop, owned by a senior in a retirement home. When I get there next time I need to have a working solution, and may be able to pull the requested information as well.

My current plan is to export/import his profile and completely wipe and reinstall FF in the actual revision, hoping for a solution this way. The last thing I want to do is to manually rebuild all his links, password lists, settings, addons dictionaries etc.

Sometimes doing a good deed turns into a debacle.

Firefox comes in two or more folders on all computers. They are;

Maintenance: (Programs Folder) <Windows Only> Firefox itself: (Programs Folder) And two folders in the profile of each user on the computer for each Firefox profile for that user.

If you remove the Firefox folder, the user profiles would not be affected.

Some protection programs don't like the update/install stubs. Go here for the full installer.

Thanks! I will carry this information with me next time when maintaining his laptop. Hopefully it will be straight forward, not a mess like this simple language pack addition turned into (requires FF 57.x, but FF updates not working at all).

uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files(x86) Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do :

Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 57.0.2 with a Full Version Installer

What will happen to other user settings, eg. AddOns and extentions, language tools (spell checking) etc? Are they part of a profile; I doubt it?

I am a Chrome user myself, so I do not really know much about the FF hurdles and its update problems.

Please read this one and will find out what is in your profile. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-firefox-stores-user-data Matter of fact Make a copy of the Profile folder. and yes they are.

If do the uninstall reinstall everything is like you left it provided that you profile is not corrupted. Even then can copy stuff to a new profile and edit some of the ones that are corrupted. Part reason have you export Bookmarks to HTML (mine are from 1995)
