numerous windows open upon start up

When I start up thunderbird, 5 windows open simultaneously. Other online answers suggest closing all windows but one and then choosing "quit" on the hamburger button but I don't have that option, only "exit". Doing this hasn't solved the issue.

ISTR that alt+f4 has worked for some users.
