Firefox update fails probably due to company firewall, how to configure proxy?
The update mechanism fails, indicated by the "Firefox can't update to the latest version." info box and also "Update failed" in the About Mozilla Firefox window. This is almost certainly due to my companies firewall and proxy. My question is: what is special about the update process that makes it fail? Seems there is not only Http involved? Any special protocol that needs to be explicitly configured in the proxy settings? Similar problems with other programs (e.g. Eclipse) could be solved with manual proxy settings, but in Firefox the manual proxy settings do not resolve the failing updates. This is on Windows 7 with Firefox 57.

This would be a company policy and you need to talk to your IT department about this and why it's blocking updates to FF. This is a End user help forum and we can't help you bypass company Firewall and their internet policies.

So you suggest the IP address is being blocked? Could be, but why would they block update if download is not blocked... My question is: might there be other reasons, anything special about Firefox update?
They could block it because it is updating and it's not from the IT department this is doing the updating that is probably the reason. But you do need to ask them are they blocking because it is doing a auto update. It's not they are blocking the IP address they are blocking the software as it runs it's updating software and they detect a update but they didn't authorize the update. Because at home FF updates without problem and not block so that would surmise they have some lockdown on how software updates on their networks.
