Tbird adds ?? when I enter 2 spaces after a period

When I enter two spaces after a period. in sent emails, Tbird adds 2 question marks. If I put two spaces between words like this, Tbird adds 4 question marks. This just started in the last few days. Here is a sample of what the recipient receives.

2???? spaces.?? one space. one return what here. 1 space. 2 spaces.?? end
