How can you display images when using basic HTML for messages?

Have an elderly client who I've switched to Thunderbird from Outlook as Thunderbird allows for showing a much more trimmed down version of HTML emails which is easier for my client to see. Using the "Basic HTML" setting for messages works really well for him combined with a larger display font.

The problem I'm having is that using Basic HTML seemingly breaks images in emails and won't allow them to display. If I switch back to "Original HTML" the images display but I would rather not do this as it defeats the entire purpose of using Thunderbird in the first place. When using "Basic HTML" there is a placeholder where the images should be (looks like a broken image placeholder) so it appears they *can* be displayed but I'm just not sure what settings need to be active to get them to do so. And before it's suggested I do have "Display Inline Attachments" already enabled (and have tried disabling/re-enabling it).

So is there a setting or config option that I'm missing here? I've combed through most of them but can't say I didn't miss what I'm looking for.

I think "Simple HTML" is specifically and deliberately designed to show just the text, without any remote content or images. I believe you are out of luck.
