Sometimes when I send a reply to a received email, Thunderbird picks up the oldest email in the folder and sends it instead of the reply I have typed. Why?

Over the last few months, I have written a reply to a received email, hit "send" and the message that is sent is not the message I typed. It substitutes the last message in the folder for the message I typed and attempted to send. This only happens intermittently.
