Since gmail automatically copies sent messages to the Sent Mail folder, uncheck 'Place a copy in' in the Copies & Folders settings, and subscribe to Sent Mail (right-click the account in the Folder Pane, Subscribe...).

more options

When I right-click the gmail account in the folder pane, there is no "Subscribe..." option.

more options

If Subscribe isn't available, the account is POP, so the Sent folder won't appear until after you send the first message.
