My account on gmail is melvincheck@gmail.com. Thunderbird is now also downloading emails for melvin.check@gmail.com. Note the dot between names. How do I stop this from happening?

That may have been a typo by someone wanting to reach you. Gmail allows such minor changes to established email accounts. You can create a filter to stop such messages..

Quote: Dots don't matter in Gmail addresses

If someone accidentally adds dots to your address when emailing you, you'll still get that email. For example, if your email is johnsmith@gmail.com, you own all dotted versions of your address:

  • john.smith@gmail.com
  • jo.hn.sm.ith@gmail.com
  • j.o.h.n.s.m.i.t.h@gmail.com
