The security icon (lock sign) does not appear even when I go to a secure web site? Should I assume that I am on a secure site?

Typically the security icon ("lock sign") appears if one goes to a secure web site - such as my bank. This assures me that I can enter the information such as my user name, password etc. (or make a payment by credit card etc.) without worry since the lock sign assures that said site is "secure". However this security icon does not appear in my "Firefox". I do not know if this indicates that the connection is not secure or what? Pls. help.

The padlock has been replaced by the site identity button, for details on using it see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Site+Identity+Button

If you want to add a padlock icon to the location bar, you can use the Padlock add-on - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/padlock-icon/
