I can't play MP3 files on my Mac and don't see how to add them to Applications under Preferences.

When I click on a song (e.g. http://www.rogerhart.ca/sites/default/files/LightTheWay-from-HappyFriends2.mp3) Firefox opens a new window, but nothing happens.

The same link works fine under Safari.

Do you see the mp3 file extensions as one of the suffixes of QuickTime on the about:plugins page?

You can open about: pages via the location bar like you open a website (about: is a protocol, so no space after it).

Yes - it's listed several time under QuckTime Plug-In 7.6.6 with the description MP3 for slightly different MIME types, all with the suffix mp3.swa

No - not with either. The second one just brings up more details about the CD.

You can open QuickTime and open that file directly in the player if the Firefox plugin doesn't work.

Yes - I know that (and I can also play it happily in Safari) but I want to make it simple for the Mac Firefox user rather than suggesting they use a different browser.

The file is send as audio/mpeg and that usually should be sufficient to make Firefox select a plugin that handles the file.
Probably a MIME type as application/x-mplayer2 will also work to select a WMP compatible player as most users on Windows won't have QT.

Does QT work otherwise correctly for you when playing embedded content?

Do others with a Mac also report that it isn't working? Is there only a problem with users on a Mac or with other platforms (Windows/Linux) as well?

You can also try to ask advice at the mozillaZine Web Development/Standards Evangelism forum if it is your own website (hadn't released before that that could be the case).

The helpers at that forum are more knowledgeable about web development issues.
You need to register at the mozillaZine forum site in order to post at that forum.

QT normally works correctly, but I will test the specific plugins you mention.

This only seems to be a problem with Snow Leopard. Firefox under Windows works fine and fixes for earlier versions on OS/X are reported on Firefox forums.

Your suggestion about the web development forum is a good one.

Thanks again for your help.

You're welcome.

Be sure to add Mac to the subject line to get the attention of Mac users if it is only a problem on Mac.
