Why does my bookmarks toolbar at the top of the page disappear so I have to click on the bookmarks tab to get it up in order to use ir. I want it to be at the top of the page all the time.

Try:

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
