I am working on a Windows Server 2003 R2 machine. The Firefox version is 10.0.2

I downloaded this file from HP: EP-CDB-enu_NB.exe http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=oj-43586-2&cc=ad&dlc=en&lc=en&os=228&product=441126&sw_lang=

Initially, the download gets mysteriously cancelled. Then I had to click the tiny try again icon. The file is about 80 MB in size and I watched it downloading. I also opened the folder it was downloading to. You could see the file place holder (96 Kb). As soon as the file is finished downloading, the place holder vanishes and the location is empty! (I have set hidden files to show).

When the download is finished, the Open options are greyed out.

Is this something HP did or a fault of Firefox?

I think that it is not compatible with your Windows Server 2003.

see: Compatibility:Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Windows XP Media Center, Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows 2000.

Thank you, Ideato' for taking an interest in this issue.

What you say cannot be because this is a package for Corporate use with drivers for an entire series of printers. They surely know that an IT department would store the files on some file server. I can understand why FF has all of its Open options greyed out. It intelligently senses that the file is missing, and it is not too difficult to program.

Thanks again.

It is possible that your anti-virus software is corrupting the downloaded files or otherwise interfering with downloading files by Firefox.
Try to disable the real-time (live) scanning of files in your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes downloading work.

See "Disable virus scanning in Firefox preferences - Windows"
