Today, I noticed that my SeaMonkey was slow, and I posted something there; however, I noticed much of the same behavior with Firefox. In fact, I am posting in IE8. Now, I suspect there might be a common problem. Firefox is subject to slow starts and slow browsing. I have tried to restart without addons. The articles I applied deal with deleting session restore files and creating a new places database. Both programs acted up this way today after my antivirus ran clean.

hello, looking at your settings it looks like some sort of adware, toolbar or potentially malicious software has taken over your keyword search (when you enter a term into the locationbar). please try to do a full scan of your system with different security tools and/or try to reset firefox and see if this improves the situation.

I have both Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, which I ran yesterday, and SuperAntiSpyware. Now I will apply your advice on resetting Firefox.

I have followed the instructions to reset Firefox. Yesterday, I ran my antivirus, Panda, and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Today I ran SuperAntiSpyware. All programs ran clean. However, I failed to mention that I have had for the past two weeks a popup in my lower right corner. I comes up periodically advertising an upgrade to some unnamed program. The popup is both rectangular and colorful. I suspect it is a photographic service; but my security programs did not detect the source. In Firefox, I went to web sites that have many pages of recipes. Browsing and paging went fine; but I am bothered by the popup.

Can you attach a screenshot?

Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot and make sure that you do not exceed the maximum file size (1 MB).

If the screenshot is to view the popup, it came up today. This time I clicked on it and it opened up in IE8 pandasecurity.com. So, it was a promotion to renew. This morning I had trouble with Firefox, which froze on the imdb.com site. So, I reopened Firefox without add-ons, making the change permanent. It ran much better.
