Shockwave flash causes Firefox to crash
My Firefox crashes when trying to open 75% of web pages. I get the windows standard "Firefox is not responding" window after it freezes while trying to load the page.
I have singled out the problem to be the Shockwave Flash (11.5.502.149) plugin as everything works correctly with this disabled.
I have tried updated flash, uninstalling and re-installing it and the same with FF but nothing seems to work so far.

hello, first if you have real player installed, please make sure that it is up-to-date since older versions of it are known to cause falsh crashes.
otherwise it may be an issue with the protected mode in the flash plugin - you could try if downgrading to flash 10.3 (which is still supported) or disabling protected mode makes a difference.
The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.
To Reset Firefox do the following:
- Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
- Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
- Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
- Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
I have tried resetting Firefox and it works great... for about 30 mins until it starts crashing again.
As for Real player, I don't have that installed so that can't be the issue.
I also tried turning off protected mode but this didn't do anything either.
when you type about:crashes into the location bar, are there any recent crash reports listed? if so please copy the latest few crash IDs and paste them here into a reply on the forum. thanks...
The newest ones are from Jan but they would be related to this issue as I have had this problem for a quite some time now.

When the crash happens, this is what the windows crash report says:

Anyone else have any other ideas I can try? Nothing is working so far :(
You can check for problems caused by recent Flash updates and try these:
- disable a possible RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin extension for Firefox and update the RealPlayer if installed
- disable protected mode in Flash 11.3 and later
- disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin
- downgrade the Flash player to version 10.3 or 11.2
cor-el, if you looked at previous comments you would see that I have tried all that already.
I am having the same problems, it makes my FF unusable with the constant flash crashes. I don't have real player.. I have win 7 and I tried updating FF and the flash both with no success or help to this problem.

Does anyone else have any other ideas?
hello lastone4, the problem you're seeing might be different since it doesn't crash the whole browser. maybe it's an issue with the protected mode in the flash plugin - you could try if downgrading to flash 10.3 (which is still supported) or disabling protected mode makes a difference.
in case you'd like to troubleshoot the issue further, it would be best to contact adobe's support & file a bug report at bugbase.adobe.com (choose "Adobe Flash Player" as the product & "Browser Integration" as the product area), since they will have a better understanding of the internals of flash protected mode & therefore may know what else might be at the root of the problem you were seeing.
whatever was happening with the flash this morning seems to have righted itself for now, so now I know that it was not firefox but just the flash iteself. It did crash the entire firefox, I just went to another browser while it was sitting there doing nothing and eventually the flash would completely crash and would allow FF to continue, although this morning every single tab was crashing.

Would appreciate it if you opened another thread for your issue lastone...
Does anyone else have any suggestions?
Have you actually got any Crash IDs from the Firerfox or Plugin crashes, if so are you able to use about:crashes and paste a couple into one of these messages.
- Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly)
- Send plugin crash reports to help Mozilla improve Firefox
If you are not getting Crash IDs is that because Firefox is hanging instead of crashing.
I also note you say
I have tried resetting Firefox and it works great... for about 30 mins until it starts crashing again.
That seems rather odd, but at the moment I can not think of a reason that should happen. Was that a one off event Is that reliably repeatable ?
If you set up an additional Firefox profile does Flash Player work for 30 minutes only everytime you reset that profile ?
Modified
lastone4,
If you are continuing to have problems it would be a good idea to start your own thread please
- use /questions/new/desktop/fix-problems
- try to follow the prompts about including troubleshooting information
- post two or three of the latest Crash IDs in that new thread
- post back again in this thread to confirm you have done so (I will crosslink the threads and see if I can help, or find help for you)
Ok, ever since I installed Firefox 20, I continually get "Shockwave plug in is not responding". And, yes I've tried everything that has been suggested. Now what?
I have had the same issue. Several times I tried a complete reinstall of all the adobe plugins. I also tried uninstalling and then reinstalling Firefox. In each case the problem returned.
As was mentioned previously, sometimes (after rebooting) Firefox works okay. However, as soon as a single web page hangs due to Flash, it is likely that all pages with Flash will begin to hang. Usually when I shut down the PC for the night the computer won't shut down (it will say Shutting Down, but it never finishes). Similarly, if the problem has happened I will often not be able to uninstall or install Adobe browser software until I force a shut down (by holding the power button down).
I tried Microsoft FixIt (a registry program) and found something to clean related to Acrobat or Flash (I can't recall which), but that didn't resolve the issues.
Finally, if I look at the Tools - Add-Ons and check for updates, it says Acrobat needs an update. That's strange, as the Adobe Reader is up to date. This may point to some conflict within the browser, but I don't know how to address this.
Help appreciated. I have now had the problem for months and the only solution is to disable the plug-ins, which prevents a lot of content from being viewed.
I've been getting this really annoying problem for at least 3 weeks or so where the message comes up and the page just sat there. I looked into my plug in directory and found Shockwave Director netscape versions12.0.2.122 and 12.0.0.112 so I disabled both and that problem seems to have been resolved.
I do have another problem in that it is impossible to check the updates as the page seems to go into a constant loop without timing out as expected.
same here, always crash, firefox for the past year. i am using chrome concurrently. i may swicth to chrome for good, using firefox for more than 10 years and recent years, i find that it's rather unstable.
Anyone other than the original poster if reading this thread does not help you then please post your own question in a new thread. Use /questions/new and please try to
- follow the prompts relating to troubleshooting information
