FIREFOX tells me that my add-on is incompatible when I KNOW it works

The latest outrage with Firefox is that after upgrading to 20.0.1, despite the fact I was assured otherwise, that StrataStripe 3.3 is incompatible. I reloaded 19.0.1 on which it had previously worked, but it too was "incompatible". I went back to version 18.0.1 with the same results. Now I guess I have to uninstall Firefox COMPLETELY and reinstall a version that will allow me to have the add-ons I want but seem to lose with every update! This sucks Mozilla!

If you drag and drop a file onto any page open in Firefox, Firefox will evaluate whether it can handle the file. If it's a web page or text file, it will display. If it's a .xpi file, Firefox will start the process of installing it. So you can drop the file on this thread if you like.

You'll have to wait to the add on get updated with the new version of Firefox. It will probably happens soon. But it does not help to uninstall Firefox because the predefinitions keeps in cache.

Thanks for your response but it doesn't dampen my growing annoyance of how Mozilla handles their updates. I don't enjoy having them forced upon me under the threat of the insecurity of the previous versions. Only time will tell if I abandon Firefox until they get more end-user friendly.

Firefox has no control over how add-ons work or update itself. But the updates are a normal conduct that every browser has for the safe of your computer. However if you does not want to get new updates you can do it by doing this:

Go to Firefox icon > OPTIONS > OPTIONS > UPDATES

Doing so you will be able to change your preferences about updates and also being notificated about them.

That's what started the whole problem. I chose NEVER update but my selection kept returning to "Check of updates but let me choose..." That is no longer the case now that I've reverted, updated, reverted...

It says on the website: Works with Firefox 3.5 - 21.

So it should be working with Firefox 20.

Did you click the Add to Firefox button on the Add-ons website to install the theme?

If you download and install the theme locally then you may have this problem.

Yes, I went to the add-ons site and did a search for the program. Was told it wasn't compatible when I attempted to install it. I'll try it again but I don't have much hope. It really doesn't make any difference now because I installed another add-on although it just doesn't have the appear that StrataStripe 3.3 had.

Directly from the add-on website: "StrataStripe could not be installed because it is not compatible with Firefox 20.0.1." Now what?

Yes, it looks that you can't install this extension (theme) in Firefox.

You can try to save the file to your computer and edit the install.rdf file to bump the maxVersion from 7.0 to 20.*

  • <em:maxVersion>20.*</em:maxVersion>

For Firefox > 6 only CSS rules and some images are applied, so this should cause less problems then a full theme.

Thanks for your response but it simply isn't worth it to fool around with editing rdf file.

Hi tdp2101,

I bumped the version for you. You can download this by right-clicking and using Save Link As. Then drag the downloaded file onto a Firefox tab to install.

Since I didn't get the author's permission, I will remove this as soon as the add-ons site is updated or upon request.

Hi tdp2101,

The StrataStripe theme toolbars looks good, but unfortunately it isn't fully compatible with some of the new features in Firefox 20. In particular, it hides the new "green arrow" toolbar button for downloads, flashing a progress bar and then leaving a large blank area, and one of the icons displayed with downloads in the Library dialog (i.e., the expected "open containing folder" icon) also turns into a blank button.

This theme hasn't been updated for quite a while, so there might be a few other gotchas using it in recent versions of Firefox. Hopefully it will get a real update and not just a version bump for those who enjoy using it.

I appreciate your efforts and have saved link as, as you indicated. However, I don't understand what you mean by "dragging into Firefox tab". What tab? Where? Thanks again.

That worked. Thank you very much. I'd never encountered that technique before. I am grateful for your efforts!
