When I click on the orange icon to open Firefox, it does not open for a longtime. After a few minutes, I get a message that Firefox is unresponsive. The ONLY way I have found to close the program is to use Task Manager to force Firefox to close.

I cannot go to 'help' on Firefox as it is totally frozen when it opens.

I am using a PC.

Thank you!

Hello,

I suggest that you try opening Firefox in Safe Mode. You can do that by holding down the Shift key on your keyboard as you click on the icon to open Firefox.

See here: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode

If the issue doesn't occur in Safe Mode then there is a good chance that an Addon or setting is causing the issue. Follow the instructions in the support article above to identify the add-on causing the issue and then disable or remove it.

If the problem still occurs even when opening in safe mode then I suggest doing a Firefox Reset. Again this can be done by holding shift as you open Firefox (select 'Reset' from the options this time).

A reset will return Firefox to its default settings. Your history and bookmarks will be saved but you will need to reinstall your add-ons.

Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings

I hope that helps.

eddyc, thank you so much for your suggestions. Unfortunately, I could get neither to resolve my problem.

I am using W-7 on a Lenovo ThinkPad. I'm certainly receptive to any other suggestions you may have. THANK YOU in advance!

Hmmm...

Ok. If you have opened Firefox in Safe Mode and it is still unresponsive and you have then reset Firefox only to find that it is unresponsive then I suspect that some other application may be causing the issue by blocking Firefox from opening properly or similar.

To confirm this please try starting Windows in Safe Mode. This blocks all applications from opening other than the ones you choose. Once you have booted into Safe Mode see if Firefox can open successfully there. It might also be worth checking whether it can get onto the internet successfully (if you want to do this then choose Safe Mode with Networking rather than standard Safe Mode).

If Firefox works ok in Windows Safe Mode then we can conclude that the problem is not in Firefox but is being caused by some other application. The problem then will be to find out which one it is.

Problems like this can often be caused by security software. Try disabling your anti-virus program once you have booted back into normal windows and see if that helps. Do you have bitguard installed? That may be causing the issue - try disabling or uninstalling it and testing again.

Have a look though your list of Windows Startup programs to see what is starting when windows boots. Disable anything that you think shouldn't be there or that you think might be causing the issue. Then restart the computer and test Firefox again.

Did you recently install any new programs around the time that the problem with Firefox started?

I hope something here helps. Without seeing your computer it's hard to give more specific advice. Let me know what happens. :)
