Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

If you do not keep changes after a restart or otherwise have problems with preferences, see:

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

In two threads about a year ago, users needed to edit a special configuration file named mozilla.cfg to end this problem. This file lives in your Firefox program folder, so it is immune to changes in your settings folder(s).

64-bit Windows 7:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\mozilla.cfg

Note: Don't just delete this file, or Firefox may refuse to start up.

This is a text file you can open in Notepad. You can delete the individual lines containing btsearch and save the file, leaving any other lines undisturbed. Or if you would like advice on the other lines, go ahead and paste them in a reply here.

Some more info about the mozilla.cfg file:

Check for the presence of a mozilla.cfg file in the Firefox program folder to initialize some prefs.

This also involves the presence of a .js (JScript) file, probably in "defaults\pref" folder, that specifies to process this mozilla.cfg file.

If you have .js files apart from the channel-prefs.js file, that sets app.update.channel, in the defaults\pref folder then open this file in an editor like Notepad and please post its content.
Also please post the content of the mozilla.cfg file.

There shouldn't be a mozilla.fcg file present unless you've created it yourself to initialize some prefs.

If you have this mozilla.cfg file then best is to do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before reinstalling a fresh copy of Firefox.
