does the search function work on win 8.1?

I just migrated Thunderbird to a Win 8.1 box from a Vista machine using MozBackup. Everything appears to be working just fine except for the search function. When I type a search term in the box, the usual 'messages mentioning: <term>' and the 'search the web for: <term>' come up, but if I click on 'messages mentioning', nothing happens. If I click on the magnifying glass, I get a search tab opened up, but it's totally blank. Have I missed something in configuring TB? Any other ideas?

do all your folder and mail on the left pane appear correctly?

Yes, everything on the left pane is correct. The only issue is, as stated, the search function.
