I had asked this before, and a moderator closed before it was solved so now I am asking it again.

FireFox had crashed a few times now and keeps resting the profile afterword. I have never told it to reset the profile. I have had to resort to using a program to backup the profile on a regular basis so I can restore it after these crashes. I am guessing Flash Player is causing the crashes. i would prefer not to submit bug reports automatically, as I never see the bugs fixed.

I do not appreciate moderators close things after asking for more information.

I don't know why it was locked, usually someone will explain that. Maybe it was a mis-click??

Prevent Firefox deleting my Firefox user profile?

To rule out Flash as a potential culprit, could you try one or both of the following:

(1) Set Flash to Click-to-Play ("Ask to Activate").

This will delay Flash from starting on a page until you approve it, which will help distinguish Flash-generated issues from page load and layout issues.

To set "Ask to Activate", open the Add-ons page using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • orange Firefox "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Plugins. Look for "Shockwave Flash" and change "Always Activate" to "Ask to Activate".

When you visit a site that wants to use the Flash, you should see a notification icon in the address bar and one of the following: a link in a black rectangle in the page or an infobar sliding down between the toolbar area and the page.

(2) Disable the Protected Mode feature of the Flash Player plugin.

The following pages provide different ways to do that:

Flash needs to completely unload from memory (restarting Firefox might help) before this would take effect.

Any improvement in these scenarios?

As for not submitting crash reports, how will we gain any insight into your issue? The crash stats site is a vital research tool for volunteers because it links your crash report with related bugs in the tracking system.

The more I think about it i am fairly certain it is flash player causing it as it normally happens when streaming video. I am going to try the suggestions for flash player.

However I do not like that my profile is getting "reset" (I call it deleted) after the crashes.

Rant about crash reports below.

As for not submitting crash reports I have two reasons. It seems to me that most bug fixes break or remove others things, all of the features I started using Firefox for are now broken or removed. Here are a few examples of that Easy to use interface. Gone Good bookmarking system. Used to be hidden, but now it is gone. Low memory usage. Bug. Memory leak that grinds my system to a halt.

Not features but problems caused by firefox. Browser based game. Bug. Websockets in webworkers is broken and has been for years.

I might be convinced to submit crash reports if it would not take years to fix bugs.

I could keep going, but the only reason I have not moved from Firefox is I have yet to find something that works better.

Hi chevyowner:

I don't know why the thread got closed, as jscher2000 pointed out, usually the Moderator who closed it will explain why. I've now unlocked it so you can continue in the old thread /questions/996482 or you can stay here and I'll leave the old thread locked. Let me know. :)

Hi chevyowner, what was the change to bookmarking that you didn't like?

I used the dropdown from the button that you could put next to the address box, that button is gone now (or at least for me).

So far the crashing at least is better, I hope it stays that way.

EDIT As of right now it seems like the suggestion to change flash seems to have worked.

Hey, chevyowner.

Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page (There’s a lot of good stuff here) and check out FEBE

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your extensions individually into installable .xpi files.

It will also make backup of files that you choose.

Hi chevyowner, I think the new combination star/clipboard icon, clipboard side, should be similar to the old button. Oh wait, "Bookmark This Page" is missing. Hmm...

The dialog can be called up in other ways:

  • Ctrl+d
  • right-click page > Bookmark This Page
  • menu bar: Bookmarks > Bookmark This Page

The fallback is to double-click the star. However, that uses the Unsorted Bookmarks folder by default.

I know about FEBE but last time I looked for it was did not support new versions of Firefox. I guess I need to look again.
