How do I have the location bar show only bookmarks, instead of history?

I recently upgraded to 34.0.5, and no matter what setting I put in the Tools>Options>Location Bar, it shows the most recently visited site, and bookmarks at the bottom. Being used to the old version, I keep going to the wrong sites.

Hi SimpleGuy, which list is the problem? The setting on the Privacy tab should control what appears in the autocomplete drop-down when you start typing something in the location bar. However, I don't think it has any effect on the list that appears when you click the triangle. If you limit the list to bookmarks, the triangle drop-down also should be filtered to show only bookmarked sites.

Also, do you use any add-ons that modify how the location bar works, such as the Omnibar extension?

All three- no matter which one I choose, it will display both bookmarks and history.

I'm not aware that Firefox 34 made any changes in this area.

In case one of your extensions has become incompatible, could you test the page in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

Not all add-ons are disabled: Flash and other plugins still run

After Firefox shuts down, a small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset).

Any difference?

This may be irrelevant to your current issue, but your Adobe plugin versions are quite ancient, which poses a security risk.

On Windows 7, you can run Adobe Reader XI. http://get.adobe.com/reader/

If you already have Reader XI but Firefox only finds the Reader 9.5 plugin, hmm, this could be due to a settings problem or corrupted plugins database.

On Windows 7, you can run Flash 16. http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

For both downloads, be on the lookout for unwanted extras and uncheck those boxes if you see them.

Thanks. I'm in Safe Mode now with the add-ons disabled, but the problem persists. My Adobe Reader and Flash were already disabled. I don't have any add-ons that would affect the location bar that I know of.
