does thunderbird keep old e-mail after they have been downloaded?

Not sure what 'My computer crashed' exactly means.

If you still have access to the crashed computer's disk, and if the data is still accessible, you should be able to copy the old Thunderbird profile off that disk, and restore it on your current installation.

We had saved it onto the new disk in a hidden file. Thanks.
