I have thousands of emails and more come in each day. I do NOT want to move them to Thunderbird. In managing my emails I have created in gmail 5 different folders in which I placed the appropriate emails to be saved there. How can I stop TB from downloading all my inbox,, and then going down the list of folders. I want to designate those 5 folders only.

right click the folders in the folder pane select properties and then set up the retention and download settings you want. This in addition to the synchronization settings accessed by right clicking the account and selecting setting should allow a very exact selections of folders to synchronize locally (none offline use in IMAP translates to a local synchronization of the message body. So if you use the account synchronization and setting to not synchronize your messages locally you will only be getting lists of mail not the whole mail anyway.

Please also make sure to look at the subscribe option on the right click menu of the account in the folder pane, that allows to setting of the folders you want to see locally.
