How do I make Firefox display a selection of bookmarks rather than Top Sites when I open a new tab/window?

Pretty self explanatory and obvious, but I can't find a way of shoeing some of my bookmarks instead of the Top Sites rows when I open a new window or tab. Can this be done?

Chosen solution

It is currently not possible with Activity Stream enabled to drag a bookmark or history item to a tile. With Activity Stream enabled there is the "Add" button in the window that opens if you click Edit. This replaces the old way to drag an item to a tile. Edit will appear above the tiles when you hover a tile.
