problem with latest TB update.
Ok I'll try to explain as best I can. When I updated to latest version of TB earlier today, I lost my taskbar Icon. But I just transferred one from start panel to the taskbar. So far, so good. So I click on new TB icon i task bar and TB opens as usual, under a different icon from the one I selected to open TB. I have attached 2 images to try and show what I am saying. Also, notice that on the TB 1 image, it shows Mozilla "Thunderbird(2") even before the app is opened.
Chosen solution
I think you misunderstand. Even when I remove the TB icon from the task bar, and open TB using the app link on my start menu, The original TB icon still does not appear. I get the one shown in the previous attachment. I have also included a snipit shot showing the unwanted icon. (not the iconic TB icon)
I guess my qualm is ..... everything was fine until the latest update. Where is the TB icon we all know?Read this answer in context 👍 0

All was working fine until installed update 52.8.0
So you pinned a shortcut from somewhere with a (2) on the end of it's name onto your start bar. What has that to do with Thunderbird at all. That is entirely Windows.
There is some discussion on the Microsoft support site here. on the topic of changing pinned shortcut names
While you are changing the name of the shortcut, I suggest you change the icon. Or as you now appear to have two of them, you might just unpin the excess one.

OK, had to reinstall the newest TB update to get things to work correctly. Don't know why, but it worked. '''' 52.8.0''''
For the future, the issue is caused by windows icon cache file being corrupted.
There are instructions here on how to force windows to rebuild it.
