I have a gmail label "AUX", it shows in subscribe list and is checked but it doesn't show on left and there's no such file in C:\Users\Dick\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\ofsvxpd1.default\ImapMail\imap.gmail.com. In gmail, I can rename it to AUX-A or AUXB and the renamed shows. However if in gmail I rename it to AUX0 there's another no show, even though it's checked in the subscribe list. SO.... What's so special in TBird about the gmail label/folder named AUX???

You are seeing the results of Aux being a device in Windows, so it is an invalid filename.
