Opening external hyperlinks, Firefox (93.0 on Big Sur) opens multiple windows and bogs down

Whenever I click on an external link from another application, Firefox opens two windows: One window for the requested link and one window with my homepage (which I have no use for at that moment) behind the requested link. It also appears to get bogged down for several minutes on both windows. If I manage to navigate to the hindmost window (loading my homepage) and close it, the requested window proceeds to load. This is very annoying and time-consuming. How do I fix this so that Firefox opens ONLY the link I requested?

Unfortunately this is a known bug on Mac when you open an external link when Firefox isn't running.

Do you mean it's been a reported problem since Catalina (I'm now running Big Sur as I noted) and it has never been addressed?
