I set up an email address with Mailfence and paid $5 now it says that my trial period has expired and I need to pay to use the account. But this was not very clear when I signed up. Is Mailfence a paid service?

Mailfence is indeed a paid service. See https://mailfence.com/#pricing

Personally I use GMX as it is fee and standards compliant.

Thanks. It's confusing cos first they ask for a donation, so I assumed it meant it was free. Then I received an email stating my trial period is ending, but at the same time they do have a free version even if a very light version.
