Firefox isn't clearing my history when I close it, even though I have checked that option.

I have Firefox set to clear my download history, cookies and cache when I close my browser. (Tools/Options/Privacy/Clear history when Firefox closes/Settings/When I close Firefox, it should automatically clear all download history, cookies, cache). I am using FF 4.0.1. This only started happening recently. It used to work.

Check that Firefox closes properly if you exit Firefox.

See "Hang at exit":

FF 8.0 W7 64bit

Have been tearing my hair out trying to get FF to auto remove all history on exit, it used to work until very recently recently.

As I do not have the technical knowledge to carry out open heart surgery inside FF's config I carried out a system restore in W7 . . .

guess what? FF now auto removes all history on exit !

Does this mean that FF is vunerable to attack in any way?

You can check the Clear Recent History settings

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history" > [√] Clear history when Firefox closes > Settings

If you use cleanup software like CCleaner then check the settings for the Firefox application.
