I downloaded Firefox 4, but I still have Firefox 3.6.11 and I repeatedly get a popup saying that there are updates that I need to install on 3.6.11. I can't uninstall the 3.6.11 because when I try to drag it into the trash it says it can't be done because it is needed to operate Mac OS

You can update Firefox by clicking Help | Check For Updates. The update will subsequently take place automatically without the need to uninstall the current version first.

The reason why you probably get that message that you can't drag it to trash is because you didn't enable Safari as the default browser again first.

Do that and then see what happens when you drag them both to trash.
