I got a pop-up box this morning saying I needed to download and update (from 5.0 to 5.0.1) immediately. Was that legit?

I was just surfing and got this pop-up box. I agreed to the download but it looked like it couldn't connect to the place to get the file, so I closed the box deciding I would do it later. When I came to the Firefox web site, it tells me my browser is up to date (still at 5.0), so now I'm wondering, was that pop-up box legit?

When I came back to my computer it had rebooted itself.

marv6:

Give everything a couple of days to "settle" on all the servers.

OR, you can download the complete installer from the link below, SAVING it to your Desktop (so you can find it), then close Firefox, then click/double-click on the installer you just downloaded and let it install.

NOTE: There are some add-ons that have not yet been made compatible with Firefox 5 that have caused great consternation for a number of users. Only the developers of those add-ons can change the versions of Firefox with which their add-ons are compatible. Google toolbar and some of the toolbars installed by AV/AS security vendors are the most prevalent ones not yet updated by their developers.

There is an update, but if you are suspicious of pop-ups, and who isn't these days, you can use the Help > About Firefox dialog to get it.

Thanks! When I do that, it tells me my Firefox is totally up to date, in spite of the face that I never actually installed the 5.0.1 update. Given that, not sure how to get the update -- I don't see any other way to reach it. Any ideas?

using firefox 5.0 and when I go to about firefox and check for updates, I get no updates available. On another computer still using firefox 3.6.18 and when I check for updates I also get not updates available. What is going on??? Is firefox 5.01 available for updates to firefox 3.6.18 and 5.0???

Firefox 5.0.1 and 3.6.19 contain changes that apply to the OSX operating system. Other OS's can update, but you will not receive an automated update notification. My Firefox 5.0 on Windows also is not yet recognizing an update to 5.0.1 using Help > About Firefox > Check for updates.

Look at the Release Notes for each of the new versions; click on "What's New in Firefox" to expand that section for each version.
SPECIAL NOTE to OSX users with Firefox 3.6.18: Read carefully about the change in Firefox 3.6.19.

Helper7677 thanks for the reply. Why does firefox make it harder to use with these updates? It should be simpler to use for real progress What is the OSX operating system? I am using Vista Home Premium on both computers.

Helper7677 I went to one of your links and I get it now. These updates apply to Mac users and not Windows. But why don't I get an update for 3.6.18 to 5.0? A few days ago the update worked just fine when I went from 3.6.18 to 5.0 on one of the computers. Was waiting to see if 5.0 worked on the first before I added it to the second computer. When I go to firefox home page it shows that 5.0.1 is available for my computer. If I download and install, will It install over my current 5.0 and 3.6.18 on the other computer?

FF 5.0 is way to buggy to deal with I am still having issues getting web pages to even load up correctly. A black flashing screen is all I get and still, no help to correct it. I reverted back to FF 3.6 and now 1/2 my book marks are missing and FF does not save book marks anymore or clear history when FF closes even though it IS set to do clear the history. Ever since I installed/uninstalled FF 5.0 it has gone down hill and is completely buggy. I really hate to see a fine browser go to shit after so many years of being the top choice of so many users. I may have to start utilizing IE if the FF Devs don't their heads out of their asses. Just saying.....
