I downloaded version 5.01 and it shows up with a crossout sign over the firefox icon but still asks if I want to replace my older version.

I am running an old version of firefox. I downloaded the new version and when it appeared on my desktop to move it to my applications folder there was a circle with a diagonal line through it over the icon. It asks if I want to replace the older version with the newer version, but I hesitate to do that because I am afraid that firefox won't work at all then.
