Some websites, such as nytimes.com cause serious problems for me. When I try to visit nytimes.com the page does not load, but also all existing tabs (and any new ones I create) stop working and downloads stop. Firefox essentially shuts down all network activity. I suspected it was an addon, but I still have the problem when surfing in safe mode with all addons disabled.

I had this problem with version 6 of firefox too.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs.
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.
