How do I get rid of the tab system in Firefox as it causes more problems than it solves.

Whenever I open Firefox, it automatically tries to open every tab that was open last time I used it. This causes major problems as my broadband link is slow, and it can often take minutes for the browser to be in a usable condition. Most times, my broadband is not available on start up, and so all I get is an error message that the Firefox server is down. How do I get rid of the tabs, or stop them trying to load?
