Every time I go to Yahoo.com and try to sign into my mail accounts, I get the Recaptcha. It may ask me to click on all cars in the pictures. When I do that I notice the "Continue" button is superimposed on the pictures of the cars and then when I try to click on the "Continue" button, I get a circle with a diagonal slash mark through it. Yahoo won't help me with this until I pay money. This problem started when their pay for phone tech program started. Please help!

Make sure you are not blocking content.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

One issue that seems more common lately is Firefox's Tracking Protection feature. When it is blocking content in a page, a shield icon will appear at the left end of the address bar next to the padlock icon. This article has more info on managing this feature: Tracking Protection {web link}

If you have a Google account then try to login to this account. Also create a cookie allow exception for the "https://google.com" domain. These steps might prevent you from getting the image challenge.

Fred, and Corel, thank you for trying to help me with this, but neither of the ways you described helped me. I tried both. Corel, did you mean to close my yahoo accounts and transfer everything over to my gmail account?

Hi Lisette22, no need to close your Yahoo! account. Since ReCAPTCHA is a Google service, the little popups might be reduced to skipped while you are logged into your Google account.

Does it make any difference if you change the zoom level on the page? Ctrl+ should enlarge and Ctrl- should reduce.

If you have modified font sizes on the Options page, particularly "minimum" font sizes, some page layouts will be broken. I don't know whether that might be a factor in this case. To check:

  • Windows: "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options
  • Mac: "3-bar" menu button (or Firefox menu) > Preferences
  • Linux: "3-bar" menu button (or Edit menu) > Preferences
  • Any system: type or paste about:preferences into the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it

In the search box at the top of the page, type font and Firefox should filter to the "Fonts & Colors" section. Click the "Advanced" button.

Then make sure the box is checked for "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of your selections above":

Then while the little popup list at the top of the dialog says "Latin", if the "Minimum font size" is larger than 9, try setting it to 9 or back to None.

Then change the popup list at the top to "Other Writing Systems" and repeat.

Finally, click OK to save the changes. Next time you reload the sign-in page and pop up the ReCAPTCHA, does it lay out any better?

Hi jscher2000, thank you for trying to help me. I did everything you suggested and it didn't work. In fact, when I did get the Recaptcha again, it only showed the top edge of the Recaptcha screen and the top edge of the "Continue" bar, again superimposed on the photos. And again, when I tried to click on the "Continue" button, it showed again a circle with a diagonal slash through it. Please, anyone, can you please help me? Thank you in advance.

Hi Lisette22, if a site is generally known to work in Firefox, these are standard suggestions to try when it stops working normally:

Double-check content blockers: Firefox's Content Blocking feature and extensions that counter ads and tracking may break websites that embed third party content (meaning, from a secondary server).

(A) Do you see a shield icon toward the left end of the address bar, near the lock icon? More info on managing the Tracking Protection feature in this article: Content Blocking.

(B) Extensions such as Adblock Plus, Blur, Disconnect, Ghostery, NoScript, Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin or uMatrix should provide toolbar buttons to manage blocked content in a page. There may or may not be a number on the icon indicating the number of blocked items; you may need to click the button to see what's going on and test whether you need to make an exception for this site.

Cache and Cookies: When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

See: How to clear the Firefox cache

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:

  • right-click (on Mac Ctrl+click) a blank area of the page and choose View Page Info > Security > "Clear Cookies and Site Data"
  • (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "Clear Cookies and Site Data"
  • click the padlock or "i" icon in the address bar, then the ">" button, then More Information, and finally the "Clear Cookies and Site Data" button

In the dialog that opens, you will see one or more matches to the current address so you can remove the site's cookies individually without affecting other sites.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

Testing in Firefox's Safe Mode: In its Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.)

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • (menu bar) Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?

Hi jscher2000, ok on the sign in page, I saw just the i button and the padlock. So there is no content blocking nor anything that is countering ads or tracking. I also tried the other things that you suggested and unfortunately, there is no improvement in the appearance of the Recaptcha screen; however, I put my cursor on the blue "Continue" button that is superimposed on the Recaptcha photos, and I did a "right-click". I then chose "Inspect Element" and I got the following message:

<button type="submit" id="recaptcha-submit" class="m-t-16px pure-button puree-button-primary puree-spinner-button" disabled="">Continue</button>

So I'm wondering what's going on. Any ideas?? I tried all the things you suggested in your last email, and there is no improvement in the appearance of the Recaptcha screen. Any other things you could suggest would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Lisette22, I don't have any other ideas at the moment, sorry.

I don't know where to go to solve this problem. Does anyone else have any ideas how to solve this? Mozilla doesn't have any user services, email or phone number to get our problems resolved. That's not good.  :-\

When did this problem start?

Could you try:

New Profile Test

This takes about 3 minutes, plus the time to test your problem site(s).

Inside Firefox, type or paste about:profiles in the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it.

Click the "Create a New Profile" button, then click Next. Assign a name like June2019, ignore the option to relocate the profile folder, and click the Finish button.

After creating the profile, scroll down to it and click the Launch profile in new browser button.

Firefox should open a new window that looks like a brand new, uncustomized installation. (Your existing Firefox window(s) should not be affected.) Please ignore any tabs enticing you to connect to a Sync account or to activate extensions found on your system so we can get a clean test.

Do the Yahoo login page work any better in the new profile?

When you are done with the experiment, you can close the extra window without affecting your regular Firefox profile. (June2019 will remain available for future testing.)

Hi jscher2000 and Cor-el,

Thank you so much for your input on this problem. jscher2000, this problem started when Yahoo began their "pay-for-tech-help" program. It's new and forces people to pay to get any help from Yahoo. I tried what you suggested and still getting the same problem.

Cor-el, here is a link to the image I was getting:

Hi jscher2000, Cor-el and Fred McD, and thank you for trying to help with this problem. This is much appreciated.

Jscher2000, this all began when Yahoo started their "pay-for-tech-help" program which started a few days ago. I tried the things you recommended in your last post, but the appearance is staying the same.

Corel and Fred McD, here is a different link. Hopefully, this one will work fine.  :-) You may have to copy/paste the address into the address bar. :-)

I just tried several logins to Yahoo. Whether I use a regular window or a private window, it never asked me to pass a ReCAPTCHA challenge. Maybe that is something optional that I haven't enabled on my account?

I usually start with this address, in case it makes any difference:

https://mail.yahoo.com/

HI jscher2000, it worked fine until I typed in my email address. Then that's when it switched to the Recaptcha again. :-( I know this might sound weird but do any of you think that Yahoo would target random email users to force them to pay money for the Tech service? It just seems very odd that this began to happen when they started that service.

Hi Lisette, perhaps there is something about your browser settings or your connection that resembles a "bot" so that is why you get the challenge? Or maybe there is a flag on your account for some reason.

Does the login page still working normally in other browsers, such as Internet Explorer?

Hi Lisette,

When I first read that, I thought "I smell a rat .... "

Here's a thought :

Give Yahoo a link to this thread and see if they still won't help you until you pay money .....

At the bottom of this article it says :

Hi jscher2000,

I tried to sign in using Internet explorer, but I'm getting the same thing happening. So it doesn't appear to be a browser issue. Hmmm......*scratching head* Lol thank you.
