Is Firefox Sync with owncloud reliable and easy?
I want to sync my Firefox without a mozilla- Account. There is an owncloud plugin, but it seems, this works on an old API version. Is the current API-Issue directly affecting me as an user? Is there an alternativ way to have more control over the services? Im not sure if the standalon server [1] or this owncloud app[2] will help me? Are there any ways or tools im missing?
Is this set up fast? Will soulutions be easyer and better documented? Is there already some effort i could join?

Yes, you'll need to setup your own server. Sync is not a peer to peer service, but rather each peer connects to the server. You'll also need to setup your Firefox Accounts server. https://wiki.mozilla.org/Identity/FirefoxAccounts
My suggestion is to view the results of this Google Search
Look for articles written by another user who has already setup their own Sync server, a person has already made their own mistakes in setting it up, and can caution you.
If you have never setup a server before or haven't worked with Python before, think twice about the learning curve in front of you.
Maybe ask for advice on IRC or on the news group.
