Where is Firefox History information kept?

The Mozilla Website gives instructions for purging browser history, cookies, etc., but it's not clear where this information is maintained on the hard drive. I see a Profiles folder, but deleting data from that location does not keep the autofill utility from automatically entering my login information on a site that's been visited before. The History/Clear Recent History button works, but what is it doing? Where is this data kept? I would rather add the location to (for example) CCleaner's list of purge duties, so that everything on the computer can be cleared at the proper opportunity. Any ideas? Thanks.

You can find two "Profiles" folders, one under "Roaming" and one under "Local". The more important one is under "Roaming" as this article describes: Profiles - Where Firefox stores your bookmarks, passwords and other user data.

Having third party utilities clear Firefox data can lead to file corruption. Because your bookmarks and history are stored in the same database file (places.sqlite), it is safer to use Firefox's settings to clear what you want to clear.

For example, you could set up Firefox to remove data at shutdown. To do that, open the privacy options here:

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Privacy

There is a button about halfway down the tab that you will need to set to "Use custom settings for history" in order to access the detailed settings.

This article has a description of the various checkboxes and dialogs: Settings for privacy, browsing history and do-not-track (click the Use custom settings for history link to zoom down to that section of the article).

Can you get it set up in a way that clears what you want cleared?

By the way, if you don't want Firefox to remember logins, switch over to the Security panel in the Options dialog to turn that off and remove already saved passwords.
