Text color button not working in Thunderbird 31.4.0

"Choose color for text" (as well "for background color") button(s) not working in Thunderbird 31.4.0

Although the palate color choice window launches and I am able to select color, after "ok" no color change carries to text in typing. Fails also in highlighting typed text and return to choosing a text color. Also tried changing 'default' color to no avail. My color choices simply do not carry through. Can an expert on this glitch (?) please help? So frustrating. Many thanks!

Works fine on 31.4.0 on Mac. Best to state what platform you're on so others on the same platform can check it out.

Thank you Kazar for your pertinent comment. I am using a home PC, MS WINDOWS 8.1 All other tool bar options on Thunderbird seem to function fine.
