When I open the Firefox browser the normal icon appears briefly and then is replaced by a link to a video. When I played the video it showed two young women shopping and a young man talking on his cell approaches and appears to be describing the girls choices in shopping to someone on the phone. The girls look concerned, and the message seems to be something about privacy. It is kind of weird and ends abruptly. I assumed initially that the video was put out by Firefox, but I am no longer sure. It has been on my computer for months now. occasionally I can go to Firefox and see a normal home page, but usually that is quickly replaced with this. If I go to Task Manager and "end task" for Firefox, I can then open the Firefox browser and it will be normal with the just the Firefox icon and no link to the video.

What does this mean? Is this video supposed to be on my Firefox browser?

Mozilla shows rotating snippets on the about:home page to run different campaigns and these changes regularly. You can consider to set another page as the home page.

If you prefer not to see snippets on the about:home page or if there are problems with a snippet then you can set this pref to an empty string value on the about:config page by deleting the current value via the right-click context menu (Modify) or a double-click.

  • about:config page: browser.aboutHomeSnippets.updateUrl (delete current value)

Delete the storage\persistent\moz-safe-about+home folder in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed ("3-bar" Firefox menu button > Exit/Quit) to remove snippets stored in IndexedDB and make Firefox use a default snippet set.

You can reset the browser.aboutHomeSnippets.updateUrl pref via the right-click context menu to the default value to re-enable the snippets and make Firefox recreate the moz-safe-about+home folder.

Close and restart Firefox after changing the value of the browser.aboutHomeSnippets.updateUrl pref.

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

Yes, it's normal to see this video. Firefox randomly chooses promotional media to show on the home page, and recently they made a series of videos to show the importance of Internet privacy. The video you're seeing is one of them, so you don't need to be concerned that it's caused by a virus.
