Is there a way to save images in the way other files are downloaded?
I tend to save a lot of images and I think it would be beneficial to save images directly to a set directory if necessary, rather than having to choose where to save the image every time. I don't have to do this with files that I click to download (such ass x.com/upload.zip. I just click on a link that has the file and it downloads. Is there a way to download images in a similar way?
I suppose "Right-Click -> Save Image" would probably be better if there's no way to possibly double-click save an image.

By right-click -> save image, images are downloaded in the same way as other files. If "Always ask me where to save files" is selected in options, Firefox uses the last directory used to save a file.
Otherwise, if you need to save a lot of images on the same page, I suggest you to use an other way: right-click -> "Page info" -> Tab "Media" and then select with Ctrl key images you want (order by type or size to find quickly images you want). Then, click on "Save as…" button: the folder is different from the directory used for classical downloads.

Save Image As... and Save Page As... will both display a dialog to select the name and location (the "As..." gives it away).
There are some add-ons to make image downloading a little more automatic, but I haven't tried any of them myself.
For example, this one seems to have good reviews: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/save-image-in-folder/ (More info: http://mozext.achimonline.de/saveimageinfolder_about.php)
