I'm new to Firefox (Google Chrome kept showing adware), I've managed to import all my settings but I simply cannot get Firefox to start with a set of pre-defined tabs. I've opened option and created a bookmark folder and selected that folder in "general" options, if I then close Firefox and restart it remembers the tab settings. However if I shut down the PC Firefox starts with just the Firefox home page.

Any suggestions?

There is software like Advanced SystemCare with its Surfing Protection feature that can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.

Yes, it is easy to set but you need to know a little tip.

Click on the menu button and selection Options. In the Home page field, enter addresses of websites you want to have when Firefox start and separate it with the | character.

Example: www.google.com|www.yahoo.com|www.mozilla.org

Hi, Thanks for taking the time........however, I've made sure that's the case but Firefox seems to forget these settings, it's as if I haven't saved my choices.

Neil.

When you open again Option tab, addresses in Home page field disappeared?

Yes.....before but for the last few start-ups they have remained.

So I guess you could call this resolved although I don't know why.

You could check the configuration file:

  1. Open Notepad (or equivalent)
  2. Open the file prefs.js in the following directory: C:\Users\<user_name>\AppData\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile_name>.default
(replace <…> by your own values)
  3. Find the line starting with user_pref("browser.startup.homepage"
  4. Check the value following the comma

Thanks for that all is set as it should be.

Ok, so it is maybe "just" a display issue.

Thanks for you feedback!

Ho hum, the problem is back.

I had to uninstall and reinstall and the issue has returned. ATM I just reset-up the bookmark each time I open Firefox. I also verify the prefs.js file but it doesn't seem to save everytime.

Any more thoughts?

In case you use "Clear history when Firefox closes".

  • do not clear the Browsing History
  • Clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, passwords, and other website specific data.

Use "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox; Linux: Firefox/File > Quit) to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the Firefox title bar.

Does Firefox create a sessionstore.js file in the profile folder when you close Firefox?

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:

Windows hides some file extensions by default. Among them .html and .ini and .js and .txt, so you possibly see a file name without file extension. You can check the actual file extension (type) in the properties of the file via the right-click context menu in Windows Explorer.

Nope, I don't think that's it. I use remember history. I seems that Firefox DOES save the prefs.js file when I change options/general/homepage to use a bookmark but when it opens up when the PC has been turned off it recreates the prefs.js file with default settings.

Crikey that's it! I use Advanced System Care, I checked the surfing/home page protection and told it to allow the change and we cooking on gas.....all burners.

Why don't these programs warn users that an unauthorised update/change attempt has been made so at least I could see what's going on.

Thanks for your help.........do you know anything about Mozilla Thunderbird and why I can't access my orange.fr E_Mail account using IMAP?

No software is perfect…

Someone can certainly help you with Thunderbird on this forum, but it is better if you ask a new question.
