Firefox crashes every night around midnight.
No activity of any kind going on with browser or other desktop applications (only background programs executing) Any idea what might be causing this? It creates restart box and reports that a crash report will be sent to Mozilla (if I submit it). Odd thing: I went to about:crashes and nothing is listed.

Hello Jack, do you have hangs in the system also in the same time ?
crashes every night around midnight
A guess.... maybe excessive.... if you have wifi with factory password and someone benefits from that (stealing part of your bandwidth) downloading with torrents....etc.
any way, try a Clean reinstall if for some reason Firefox not installed correctly.
This means you remove your Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. This process does not remove your Firefox profile data (such as bookmarks and passwords), since that information is stored in a different location.
To do a clean reinstall of Firefox, please follow these steps: Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
- Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from mozilla.org (or choose the download for your operating system and language from this page) and save the setup file to your computer.
- After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (or open the Firefox menu and click the close button ).
- Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
- Windows:
- C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
- C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
- Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
- Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
- Windows:
- Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
- Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
- Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.
WARNING: Do not use a third party uninstaller as part of this process. Doing so could permanently delete your Firefox profile data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. These cannot be easily recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device! See Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.
Thank you.

Thank you.
I did as you noted: I will let you know after tonight whether that did the trick. Something I left out concerning my setup. I had an old x86 version of Firefox installed (not using), I was using the 64bit version. (not sure if that is relevant or not). Anyway, only 64-bit version has been installed now.
Last night it crashed again at 12:24AM. --- I am going to live with this for now. Not too big a deal.
Thanks for the advice. That was probably a good thing to do anyway - now I know the install is clean.

Do you have any software scheduled to run during that time?
Backup of C: drive where Firefox code and data area exists runs at 1AM. Other than that, I am generally off the computer entirely. I might try to stay up tonight and see if firefox does not crash till backup is in process. It always seemed to be more related to day rollover. But could be wrong - not usually awake until 4AM when I see the crash and recovery option. Thanks.

Try changing the time of that backup process to a few hours later, and see if the time of that crash changes the same amount of time.
I tried this - no help. I am going to close this if I can. I don't have the time to dedicate to all possible issues involved.
Thanks. Worth the try - it sure seems like a scheduled task would be involved.
