Thunderbird 45 attaches the wrong file in place of logo in signature block

Recently, Thunderbird has occasionally started inserting the wrong logo in my signature. The signature is in an html file created in notepad and has been working fine (with occasional mods) for years. Two weeks ago, it attached another company's logo in place of mine. Today, it replaced the logo with a pdf of a customer invoice (as a separate attachment), although all of the text portion of the signature was fine.

It doesn't happen all the time, but when it does, it is a mess. I don't believe this ever happened before the automatic upgrade to ver 45.

In the case of the bogus pdf attachment, when I try to "edit as new" or "forward" the bad Sent-message, the logo and the pdf disappear. Both are also missing when I forward the message to another email address. The source of the forwarded message bogus-pdf message shows

... where example.com represents my company domain. The signature html file and the logo file are both in the same folder in the MyDocs directory. This is on a W7 computer.

If it matters, I have a very large number of email inbox and sent records, although I have moved many to personal folders outside of inbox and sent box. After that, I always compact the folders.

What can I do to fix this?

try disabling the auto save of documents being edited and see if that helps. If it is the bug I am thinking of it will.

On the toolbar > Options > Composition > General

This seemed to solve the problem, but it is a fix that disables an important feature, autosave. Apparently Tbird saves logos and graphics that have come in as temporary files and then forgets it has done so, thus saving the same types of objects from another email with the same temp filename. So, if the draft reply is open for a while, there is a chance the wrong temp items will be sent, if other emails have been opened and replied to. Very messy. Hopefully, it will be fixed. It is definitely a bug.

Thanks, Matt.

yes definitely a bug.

I think this is the last remaining of the cluster of them around basically the same issue. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1201782

thanks Matt for the bugzilla ref. The first report appears to be in v38 over 8 months ago. I note from this ref that the problem is either still occurring after v45 or has been re-introduced between v38 and v45.

It is important for the team to note that this bug has VERY important negative consequences for the user, as inappropriate competitor logos can be substituted for the user's own logo (just one example).

Disabling auto-save is not a safe workaround, for obvious reasons.

I am concerned that either the importance of the bug has not been recognized, or that its genesis is very deeply embedded in the code for a major module of the product and is difficult to correct.
